Kelsall

The name Shone derives from Sion, the old Welsh form of John (there is no letter J in Welsh). Shone is a holdover that did not convert to Jones and is concentrated in northeast Wales and adjacent English counties.

In the 1881 census there were 1300 people named Shone living in England and Wales with 90% in five counties, Cheshire, Lancashire, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Shropshire. There were 212 people named Shone in Flintshire.

Shone Distribution in 1881 Per 100,000

Lily Shone was my (Peter Kelsall’s) grandmother, my mother’s mother. The Shones are a Buckley area family that can be traced back to the 1500’s in the Hawarden parish registers. Our direct line traces back from Lily through William (b. 1845), Samuel (1817), William (1789), Thomas (1766), John (1740) and (probably) William.

Lily Shone was born in Buckley in 1879. She met my grandfather, John Iredale, while she was in service (i.e. working as a live-in servant). John came from Huddersfield in Yorkshire and his mother and grandmother were confectioners. After they were married, Lily and John opened a pie and peas shop in the Lane End area of Buckley, which later became a bakery and cake shop and which they operated until retirement in the mid 1950’s. John died in 1957 but Lily survived to the age of 92, passing away in 1971. After retiring from the shop, Lily and John lived in Tramroad, Buckley next door to my father’s sister, Gwen and her husband, Jack Whitehead. This was near St. Matthews Church and around the corner from where Lily lived as a girl.
